Gansu, circa 1900This lovely cabinet is one of a pair to be sold together. The cabinets originate from Gansu, where walnut wood was commonly used for furniture particularly in the western part of the province. As in other parts of China, cabinets were almost always made in pairs, but it is unusual to find the two cabinets still together and in such good condition. A thick top extends over the sides of each cabinet, and pieces like this were often placed side by side to provide an extended surface for working or for displaying ornaments or offerings to ancestors. Each one has the classic 'deer shaped' feet common on Gansu furniture, as well as some simple carving on the bottom apron. Beautifully proportioned and in a rich, warm finish, the cabinets would be perfect set into alcoves. They each have two small drawers at the bottom and a shelf inside.
