Qinghai, circa 1900This piece started life as a storage container for grain in Qinghai province in the far north west of China. Originally it was accessed through the top lid, but this has been sealed and the front panels converted into doors to make it more practical as a modern sideboard. The black lacquer on the frames is original but the traditional paintings of books, vases and other possessions on the doors have been retouched more recently. The cabinet has a shelf inside each of the two compartments.
