Shaanxi, circa 1880This beautiful cabinet shows many of the carved decorative elements that were common in furniture from Shaanxi province in northern China - home of the ancient capital of Xian. The bottom apron and the front and rear spandrels at each side of the cabinet show some wonderful open carving, while the large upper drawer is framed with a design typical of the region. The cabinet is in elm wood, with the frames on the front finished in a black lacquer to contrast with the doors and panels. There is one shelf inside.
