Qinghai, circa 1900This brightly painted cabinet is from Qinghai in western China. It started life around 100 years ago as a container to store grain, and originally the four doors at the front were fixed panels, with a top lid instead providing access to the inside. The lid has been fixed and the front panels converted into doors to make it more practical for modern use. A shelf has also been added inside each of the two compartments. The lacquer and paintings are original, with the decoration showing vases and peony flowers - a symbol of status and prosperity. The black lacquer frame surrounding each of the doors contrasts beautifully with the orange lacquer and creams and greens of the paintings. Given a new lease of life, the cabinet now would make a wonderful sideboard in a dining or reception room.
