Qinghai, circa 1900Cabinets like this, with open shelf sections above a main set of doors are referred to as display cabinets (or 'wanli') in Chinese. The top part of the cabinet would be used to display valued possessions, while inside the doors the owner would store books and documents. This particular piece is finished in its beautiful original red lacquer, produced using the cinnabar pigment that was famously used in Qinghai and surrounding provinces. The lacquer is worn towards the base of the cabinet but is otherwise in excellent condition. The open carvings that frame the upper shelf section are beautifully worked, showing a complicated floral design. There are still traces of green lacquer on parts of the carving. The two narrow doors set within the centre of the cabinet are typical of Qinghai furniture. The cabinet has one shelf inside.
