Shanxi, circa 1850Dating from the middle of the 19th century, this lovely cabinet is in a highly original condition. The red lacquer finish is old and has had minimal restoration other than cleaning. The dark paintings are now faded but would once have been in black and shining gold, depicting landscapes and flowers in circular frames. Around these paintings are further faint geometrical patterns incorporating swastikas - a symbol in buddhism for good luck. Inside the cabinet is a fixed shelf with two small drawers inset. This is a beautiful piece that has retained all its original character, and its smaller proportions would allow it to fit perfectly into most modern homes.
