Shanxi, circa 1850Over 150 years old, this imposing cabinet still has its original hardware and thick black lacquer finish. It comes from Shanxi province in north central China and has the simple 'square cornered' design common in larger cabinets from the region. Unlike other similar pieces it has no painted decoration and the doors are mounted on wooden hinges that fit inside the frames, rather than on external metal hinges. This gives a very pure, minimal appearance that would suit many modern homes. the black lacquer has cracked and worn in many places but other than around the front legs is largely intact. The cabinet has one shelf inside as well as a half shelf over the section behind the lower panel.
