Gansu circa 1860This large sideboard would take price of place in any dining room or entrance hall. It originates from Gansu province in western China, and has the distinctive extending lid and 'deer shaped' feet of furniture from the region. In the west of Gansu walnut was readily available and so was one of the most popular materials for furniture making. The wood has a beautiful rich tone, which gives this piece real warmth and character. The side spandrels are beautifully shaped right down to the feet, with the only other decoration being the brass hardware. Originally the two outer doors would have been fixed panels, with the inside of the cabinet being accessed only via the central doors. To make for more practical use today, these have been converted into additional doors.
