Qinghai, circa 1800This large, very striking cabinet is around 200 years old, originating from the far western province of Qinghai. The design is a good exmple of pieces from this part of China, with the narrow doors set within a fixed panel either side. The four drawers at the bottom are a more recent addition, adding some modern practicality to an otherwise very pure, simple shape. The paintings on the cabinet, set against a rich red lacquer surface, are original and although worn are still very well preserved. They show typical designs of vases of flowers and other possessions, as well as butterflies - symbolic of marital happiness and long life. The decorative door hardware and hinges are also original. This is a wonderful and now quite rare cabinet that would make a wonderful statement piece in a reception room.
