Beijing, circa 1860One of a pair of cabinets to be sold together, this large, imposing piece is from Beijing and shows the simple 'square cornered' design and heavy construction that was common in cabinets from the capital. Cabinets like these were placed as pairs in a reception room, used to store clothing and other household items. It is unusual to find a pair still together, particularly as in this case in such good condition and still with the original finish. Each cabinet has some lovely carved detail of flowers on the bottom apron, while the insides include a fixed shelf with two small drawers and one further removable shelf. The doors of each cabinet are separated by a central stile, which can be removed to give easier access to the interior space. Four additional drawers at the bottom provide further storage space. This is an unusual find and the pair of cabinets would look wonderful in a modern reception room either side of a fireplace, or used for bedroom storage.
