Qinghai, circa 1900This piece, like a number of others in our current collection, started life with a top lid rather than front opening doors, and was used for storing grain. This type of piece normally originates in Gansu province but this was is from neighbouring Qinghai. By converting the front panel into two doors, it has been transformed into a very attractive sideboard. The worn red lacquer, as well as the nice carving around the doors and on the bottom apron, is original.
