Qinghai circa 1880Low furniture was common particularly in northern parts of China, where it would be used on the raised 'kang' - a heated platform which formed the main living space during colder months. This piece would have been used for everyday storage, and still has its original paintings and hardware. The paintings are in monochrome and show figures from Chinese legend, while a vase decorates the carved spandrels at each side. The two side doors below the little drawers would originally have been solid panels, but have been converted into doors to make the piece more practical. Great today as an unusual TV stand.
