Shanxi circa 1860This beautiful cabinet is fairly typical of the large painted cabinets produced in the Shanxi region. In this case rather than flat doors mounted onto the side frames the cabinet doors are set with narrow side panels either side. Moulded frames add further definition to the doors, frames and to the three lower drawers. The red lacquer finish and the gold and black paintings are original and although darkened and faded over time are still very much intact. The paintings depict figures from Chinese legend against a landscape of mountains. The detail is remarkable and this would make a stunning piece set in a modern reception room. The cabinet has two shelves inside.
