Shanxi, circa 1880With its open section below the two doors and three drawers, this is a highly unusual cabinet the originated in Shanxi province in central western China. While elm was the main material used for furniture in the region, walnut was also common and the wood here has a beautiful warmth and rich tone. It was possibly used originally in a kitchen, with the lattice shelf used to hold storage jars of oil or rice, with the upper section, which has one shelf inside, for other foods. Today it would work beautifully in a reception room as an unusual accent piece.
