Beijing, circa 1880This unusual chest would once have been used to hold family valuables - money and jewellery. The top section is accessed by two half board lids, while two doors open into the bottom section. The chest is made from elm and the original dark lacquer is still visible, but now largely worn particularly around the lower part. The circular brass hardware on the doors and the upper clasps used to hold shut the two lids are more recent additions. The central stile between the two doors is removable, allowing for larger items to be placed in the bottom section.
